Founder of Sunny California

David McIntosh

David McIntosh didn’t set out to build a brand. He set out to create spaces that felt right — places where people could slow down, connect, and leave happier than when they arrived.

Years before Sunny California had a name, that instinct began to take shape through Midtown Surf Shop in Santa Cruz — a thoughtful retail space that quietly tested a bigger idea. What started as a surf shop became something more: a place where experience mattered more than transactions, and where people stayed longer than they planned.

It also reflected what David personally cared about — time in the water and time on the road. Surf and moto, not as separate worlds, but as part of the same rhythm. Midtown became a space where both could exist side by side, accessible to anyone, whether they had been doing it their whole life or were just stepping into it for the first time.

“Experience comes first.
Everything else follows.”

Before retail, David was a concert promoter, building large-scale promotions and live experiences, working alongside tours and gatherings that filled venues and stretched far beyond a single room. That experience shaped how he understands space — how people gather, how energy moves, and how something can feel full without demanding attention.

At the center of it all is a simple, steady compass: family, community, and the belief that how you build something matters just as much as what you build.
